There are hundreds of ways someone can steal a part of your identity and gain economically from it, find out how you can avoid the problems before they start:

  • If you think you may be a victim of identity theft or fraud, report it immediately! Most credit card and banking institutions offer their own form of protection against this and you will not be liable for any fraudulent charges if it is reported quickly.
  • Check your mail every single day and make sure you're receiving everything you should be. Credit card statements and bank account information should come every month unless you've asked otherwise. If these documents are not in your mail box, they could be in the hands of someone else. In that case that you will be out of town for an extended period of time, ask the post office to hold your mail or ask a family member to pick it up for you.
  • Maintain a record of all of your financial and banking accounts. It is recommended you keep these files for the past year or beyond that if possible. This gives you easy access to them if you ever need to dispute something.
  • Obtain a copy of your credit report at least a couple times a year. The report will contain a list of every known credit card in your name and its balance. You'll quickly know if anyone has used one of your cards or opened a new one in your name.
  • Never give our your personal information, such as social security number, bank account number, credit card number, etc, unless it is to a trusted source. As far as putting that information online, only do so with well known vendors or companies with a secure web site.
  • If you frequently use online services, your user name and password are of the utmost importance. You should never give either of these out unless it is a trusted source. Your password should be very unique with numbers and letters, which makes it much more difficult for someone to steal.
